Triton College will be honoring the village of Franklin Park from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, in the Triton College Botanical Gardens (east side of campus), 2000 Fifth Ave., River Grove.

A special plaque will be presented to Village Mayor Barrett Pedersen.

Triton College Softball Team Builds Momentum Since Arizona Trip
Things are coming together for the Triton College softball team. After going winless against top-notch competition during their trip to Arizona, the Lady Trojans are 9-4 since returning home.
Triton continued to gain momentum after sweeping a doubleheader from Rock Valley College 3-2 and 11-3 March 31 in River Grove.
The Lady Trojans are within a game of .500 with a 9-10 record, including a 3-0 mark in the North Central Community College Conference (N4C).
"We played all Division I community colleges in Arizona," head coach Art Kasak said. "Our first game was against a team that already played 25 games. We went to school out there but the trip was good because we're starting to come together and I'm really excited about what this team can do."
Jazzy Camacho (Lane Tech) pitched a solid first game against Rock Valley. However, the Golden Eagles spoiled the effort with two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at two.
But the Lady Trojans responded immediately in the bottom half. Michelle Rago (Argo) led off the frame with a double and with one out scored on Samantha Pozzie's (Riverside-Brookfield) game-winning single to give Triton the dramatic victory.
In the second game, the Lady Trojans dominated winning in five innings behind a seven-run outburst in the second inning.
Regina Filomeno (Morton West) broke the game open with a bases loaded clearing double that gave Triton a 5-1 lead. Caitlin Thompson (Argo) followed by launching a rocket over the left field fence for her second home run of the young season to make it 7-1.
Triton wrapped matters up via the eight-run rule as a Marilie Jaime's (Morton East) two-run single ended the contest. Samantha Hinman (Ridgewood) pitched all five innings for the complete game victory.

Triton College Baseball Team Wins Doubleheaders Over South Suburban and Morton
The Triton College baseball team has put themselves in a good position in their quest to defend the Region IV Championship. The Trojans picked up a doubleheader sweep over region rival South Suburban College with victories of 6-5 and 7-6 March 30 at Triton's Symonds-Puckett Field.
The wins ensured Triton of the season series over the Bulldogs which is key as the Trojans look to secure the top seed in the Region IV Tournament. The Trojans are 16-8 and have swept twin bills from Moraine Valley, College of DuPage, Morton and South Suburban since returning from their Florida trip.
"It's good to go into April as the leader in the region," head coach Harry Torgerson said. "But there's a long way to go. We have to keep making strides and beat the teams we're supposed to beat."
In game one against South Suburban, Triton jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a Ricky Divito (Driscoll) two-run double in the fourth. However, the Bulldogs rallied late before Mike Schroeder (North Newton, Ind.) picked up his second save of the season to preserve the win.
The Trojans took control of the second game with a four-run fifth inning. Triton benefited from three walks, a hit batter, and a critical South Suburban error to go ahead 7-4.
But just like the first game, the Bulldogs made things interesting late. However, starter Chris Hoffman (Conant) was able to get out of trouble to earn the complete game victory.
On March 31, the Trojans won a pair over Morton College by scores of 22-15 and 7-3 at Symonds-Puckett Field.
Triton belted out 21 hits and hit four home runs in a wild first game. Both teams capitalized from the wind blowing out to left field, combining for 33 hits and eight home runs.
A.J Quinones (Oswego), Rocco Brandonisio (Bishop Gorman, Nev.), Mike Bolling (Guerin Prep), and Ryan Petrulis (Lincoln-Way East) all went deep for the Trojans.
The offenses cooled off in the second game. But the top three in the Trojans batting order carried the load, accounting for all seven runs. Leadoff man Steve Mahler (Schaumburg) went 3-for 4 with two runs scored. Bolling scored a pair of runs and third place batter Carlos Luciano (Clemente) scored three times.

Join Triton College for Earth Day 2010
Triton College will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, 11 a.m.-2 p.m in the Triton College Library, located in the Learning Resource Center (A Building) on the west side of Triton’s main campus, 2000 Fifth Ave., River Grove.
Triton’s Greening the Campus Committee will be sponsoring a series of events promoting the Earth Day initiative and community members will have a great opportunity to learn more about the green movement.
Topics of interest will include climate policy, water conservation and rain barrels, energy efficiency, food impacts, habitat restoration, renewable energy and green jobs.
Find out what steps you can take to reduce your carbon footprint and help protect our environment.
Exhibits will feature:
• Student-created posters and multimedia presentations focusing on sustainability.
• Lost and Found Art display.
• Information on courses and careers with a “green” focus offered through the Continuing Education Department.
Attendees are encouraged to bring old cell phones to recycle. A recycling container provided by Samsung will be available.
Admission is free of charge and open to the public.

Triton's Pappas Named Coca Cola Gold Scholar Award Recipient
Vicky Pappas, a first-year student at Triton College, was recently awarded the Coca-Cola Gold Scholar Award winning $1,500 in scholarship money.
This annual recognition program administered by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society honors outstanding community college students who show intellectual rigor in their course of study, demonstrate academic leadership and civic growth, and who extend their community college education to better themselves, their schools and their communities. Pappas has demonstrated all of those qualities and more.
Experiencing the effects and severity of Alzheimer's Disease at an early age when her grandfather was diagnosed with the disease, Pappas focused on a serious goal for herself - receiving a bachelor's degree in neuroscience to pursue graduate work and further the field of neurodegenerative research.
While receiving her high school diploma from Elmwood Park High School in less than a year through the Triton College High School Completion Program, Pappas concurrently pursued her college education at Triton and will be graduating this May as a member of the Class of 2010.
Over the past year, while serving as the vice president of Fellowship and the vice president of Leadership of the Triton College Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Pappas designed the Homeless for the Night Charitable Food Drive, and with PTK team members set up a receiving station outside of the Jewel food store in Melrose Park, collecting donations and delivering the goods to a local shelter. Vicky is also a member of Triton's Scholars Program, volunteers as a Triton tutor in biology, chemistry and English, and has also been invited by the Union League Club of Chicago to be a member of the Rotaract Club of Chicago.
Accepted into Harvard and Mount Holyoke College on full scholarships, Pappas is holding out on picking a school to further her studies until after graduating from Triton. She is currently waiting for acceptance letters from Yale, Brown University and Johns Hopkins University.
"I wanted to prove to myself that I could do anything that I put my mind to," Pappas said. "If you set goals for yourself, anything is possible. After hearing about winning the Coca-Cola Gold Scholar Award I was so taken back. To be chosen as one of the top 50 students in the country is such an honor."
On April 19, Pappas will be featured in an article by USA Today announcing her scholastic achievement and also has a chance at winning the Coca Cola Foundation's New Century Scholar Award - an honor that is granted to the top student in the state and awards a $2,000 stipend in scholarship money.

Triton College Hosts Future Focus College Fair Oct. 15
Triton College and area high schools will cosponsor the 32nd annual Future Focus college fair from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Robert M. Collins Center on the east side of Triton's campus, 2000 Fifth Ave., River Grove.
The free fair enables interested individuals to speak with representatives from more than 150 four-year colleges and universities from across the country about admission procedures, program offerings, tuition expenses and financial aid. Participants also can attend financial aid mini-sessions or speak with representatives from local banks.
"Future Focus is an excellent opportunity for students and their parents to learn about and meet with representatives from many different colleges in one location," said Triton Dean of Enrollment Services Mary-Rita Moore.
More than 4.000 people have attended each Future Focus, and Triton encourages community members with questions about college to stop by this year's fair. Free trolley shuttle service will be provided from Triton's parking lots to the Robert M. Collins Center.
